The movie tells a story of Daniel Plainview, an ambitious, murderous oil pioneer on his hunt and rise to power. He gets blinded by his own ambition, which results in the destruction of lives, the lands of Little Boston, his family, and ultimately – his own soul. Every accomplishment he makes throughout the movie is accompanied by an equal or greater destruction. He enters an unholy alliance with Eli, a manipulative, greedy pastor that uses his church to profit from Daniel’s oil business. Both religion and capitalism are used as vehicles for selfish gain – one feeds off the land, and the other off wealth. In the end, Daniel gains the world – yet loses everything at the same time.
